Negative emotions and engagement

In short

Polarity does not affect Emotional Engagement. A strong negative emotion counts like a strong positive emotion of similar energy. Tense ads usually score high on engagement; quietly sad ads often score lower because sadness is a calm emotion, not because it is negative.

What it is

A common question: is a strong negative emotion considered less engaging than a strong positive one?

No. Foresight separates how strongly people react (Emotional Engagement) from how pleasant the reaction is (Valence). Polarity itself is ignored when engagement is computed: a strong negative emotion is comparable to a strong positive emotion of similar energy. A negative emotion is never marked down for being negative.

What feeds it

Emotional Engagement is built from the eight predicted emotions, each counted according to how activating it is. Valence is built from the same emotions, each counted according to how pleasant or unpleasant it is. See Valence and intensity.

How it works for negative creatives

What matters for engagement is energy, not tone:

  • Tense or scary ads rely on higher-energy emotions such as fear. They usually score high on Emotional Engagement and low on Valence: a strong reaction with a negative tone.
  • Sad or melancholic ads evoke a quieter, calmer emotion. Even when sadness is clearly predicted, engagement often stays moderate or low, because sadness on its own is calm. Sad ads score higher when the sadness is intense or comes with a higher-energy emotion such as fear (a dramatic warning) or excitement.
  • Calm positive ads that mostly evoke contentment behave like sad ones on intensity: a pleasant tone with modest engagement.

So a calm emotion contributes less to engagement whatever its tone, and a higher-energy emotion contributes more whatever its tone. These are tendencies that follow from how engagement is built, not fixed outcomes for every creative.

Scale and direction

Emotional Engagement runs from 0 to 100; higher means a stronger reaction than most reference creatives. Valence runs from −100 to +100, with 0 as neutral.

Valence does not enter the E-Score, which combines Emotional Engagement and Attention. A well-made dark or emotional creative is not marked down for its tone.

Image vs video

In a video, a sad build-up followed by an uplifting ending averages out in the overall numbers. The emotion timeline shows the arc that the overall value hides, and the Scenes view shows Engagement and Valence scene by scene.
